Scenario Briefing

Review the scenario details below. You can customize the Background, Issue, and Goal to practice different variations.

Background

Donna Pierce is HR Director at Apex Solutions, a fast-growing B2B SaaS company. She is extending you an offer for a Field CTO role — a senior technical executive who works alongside the sales team to close enterprise deals and drive technical adoption post-sale.

Issue

The offer is presented as a $300K-$400K OTE package. Sounds great. But OTE buries the real question: what is the BASE? What is the variable? What does it take to actually HIT that OTE? Donna will use the complexity of the comp structure to confuse, delay, and deflect. Your job is to see through it.

Goal

Negotiate a specific, documented comp structure. Know the base. Know the variable. Know the quota assumption. Know the upside. Do not accept a number — accept a structure you understand and can verify. Then use the playbook: reframe your role as non-sales to justify a higher base split, expose attainment risk to create leverage, anchor above the ceiling, stay silent after asking, and never let equity or signing bonus substitute for a better base.

What You'll Be Evaluated On

  • Immediately asked for the base salary, not just accepted the OTE framing
  • Exposed the 0-80% variable dead zone as a negotiation lever
  • Argued for a higher base split (65/35 or 70/30) by reframing the role vs. AEs
  • Anchored above the stated band ceiling
  • Used market data (Radford/Levels/Glassdoor) to support base ask
  • Held silence after making their ask instead of filling the void
  • Rejected signing bonus and equity as substitutes for base improvement
  • Negotiated a guaranteed variable floor or ramp-period draw
  • Asked for the offer in writing before committing
  • Gave Donna a face-saving close path to get internal approval

💡 Pro Tip

Customize the scenario to match your real-world situations. Edit the Background to reflect your company's context, adjust the Issue to match common customer problems you face, and modify the Goal to focus on skills you want to develop.
